TEXAS sludge victims                                     Back to  Home Page

EPA'S 1994 PUBLIC RELATION CAMPAIGN to debunk sludge horror stories included
Texas at # 1 (Merco/NYC biosolids expose' at Sierra Blanca) and # 9 (pathogen
regrowth during shipment).

TEXAS - Keith Massey and his neighbor William Barina sought help from Senator Phil Gramm regarding
their concerns about odors, potential for surface and ground water contamination, and health effects
suffered by abuttors of a Class B sewage sludge site in Guy,Texas.   Texas Natural Resources inspected
the site and said “no glaring problems were identified”.   Mr. Barina now suffers from terminal pulmonary
fibrosis which can be caused by  “a response of the immune system of unknown cause”.  Immune system
damage is a common complaint of sludge victims.   One farmer exposed to the sludge 2 years ago is still
suffering from throat and lung problems.   Other neighbors of the sludge site have been afflicted with
leukemia, cancer of the bladder and lymphoma.
